How to apply for an Aadhar card

Aadhaar is a 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to the residents of India. To qualify for an Aadhaar number, you will have to complete multiple checks and data verification. These checks will be done when you apply for your card.

Applying for an Aadhar card is free of cost. Here are the steps you need to follow to successfully apply and receive your 12 digit number and card:

Step 1: Locate the Aadhaar Enrollment Center

Whether you are applying for the card for yourself or a member of your family, you need to visit an Aadhaar Enrollment Centre. Enrollment is done free of cost. You can enroll at any enrollment center near you.

How to Apply for Aadhaar at Enrollment Center

You can apply for Aadhaar by visiting the UIDAI website, searching for your nearest enrollment center and selecting the information, and entering:

  • state
  • postal (pin) code
  • search box

Once you have entered the details in the required fields, you will get the addresses of the centers near you. You will also get information about these centers whether they are temporary/permanent, how many enrollments and updates have been completed in the last 30 days, and when the information was last updated.

Step 2: Apply for Aadhaar by visiting the enrollment center along with supporting documents

Once you choose your enrollment center, you will have to make an online appointment to visit the center. You will need to visit the center with some documents. These are:

  • Identity Proof Documents – PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License, etc.
  • Address Proof Documents – Water / Electricity / Gas Bill, PAN Card, Passport, etc.
  • In case you don’t have any valid personal documents – A family eligibility document containing your details (in this case head of the family should be enrolled for Aadhaar).
  • If you do not meet any of the above criteria, you can take the help of an introducer at the enrollment center, who is appointed by the registrar and who has a valid Aadhaar number.

Step 3: Enrollment for Aadhaar

Once you visit the center with the required documents, here are the steps you need to complete:

  • Collect the enrollment form available at the center.
  • Fill in all the relevant and mandatory information like your name, date of birth, address, gender, and mobile number.
  • After this, information about biometrics will be taken at the center. This includes a scan of your photograph (face only) as well as your fingerprints (all 10 fingers) and your eyesight.
  • Children below 5 years of age – Parent/Guardian’s name, Aadhaar, and biometrics must be provided.
  • Review all the details provided, make any corrections if required during the review process and complete the enrollment by submitting the form.
  • You will receive an acknowledgment slip which will contain your enrollment number and other details that were collected.

Download Aadhar card

You can get an electronic copy of your Aadhaar by using your EID. Follow the steps given below to download your Aadhar card:

  • Go to https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/.
  • Select the option ‘Enrollment EID’
  • Enter your 14-digit Enrollment ID number as well as time and date values ​​in 14-digit format.
  • Enter your Full Name, Pin Code, and Image Captcha Code.
  • Next, click on the ‘Request OTP’ option and confirm.
  • Enter the OTP that you will receive on your registered mobile number.
  • Then click on the ‘Download Aadhaar’ option.
  • The electronic copy of your Aadhar card will be ready for download

Check Aadhar status

You can check the status of your Aadhaar if you have enrolled for it at any enrollment center. You will need your Enrollment ID or EID to check your status. Your EID can be found at the top of the acknowledgment slip received after your enrollment.

EID is a 28-digit number consisting of two parts:

  • 14 digit enrollment number in the format 012/01234/012345 and
  • 14-digit date and time of enrollment in date dd/mm/yyyy format:
  • However, to check your status, all you need is a 14-digit enrollment number. Providing the remaining 14 marks is optional.

Retrieve Lost/Forgotten EID

If you have lost or forgotten your EID, you can retrieve it by visiting the Retrieve Lost or Forgotten EID/UID webpage on the UIDAI website. It takes around 60 to 90 days to receive your Aadhaar card once your data is collected and uploaded to the Central Identity Data Repository (CIDR).
